Ankle sprains/strains are very common injuries. They can occur during sports and other physical activities, but they can also occur simply by walking on uneven surfaces or going down diagonally. Most people have sprained their ankle at some point in their lives. Pain and swelling are the most common signs of ankle ligament damage in the case of a sprain and injured muscles/tendons in the case of a strain.
The ligaments, muscles, and tendons of the ankle hold the bones and joints in place. They protect the ankle joint from abnormal movements, especially twisting, turning, and rolling of the foot. When one of these parts of the ankle is forced to stretch beyond its normal range, a sprain or strain occurs. Sprains can occur on different parts of the ankle, and the most common ankle sprain occurs on the lateral or outside part of the ankle, resulting in a lateral ankle sprain.
Some people are prone to ankle sprains and strains. For people with a hindfoot varus where the general nature or posture of the heels is slightly turned inward, these injuries are more common. This is because it is easier to rotate/twist the ankle. For people prone to such injuries, it is crucial to take preventative measures.
Even in those who have had a severe sprain in the past, it is easier to twist/rotate the ankle and cause a new sprain or strain. Therefore, one of the risk factors for ankle injuries is having ankle instability. Those with weak muscles may be more susceptible. Risk factors also include activities, such as basketball and jumping sports, where an individual can fall and injure the ankle.
