Back pain during pregnancy can range from mild pain associated with specific activities to more acute or chronic pain that persists throughout the day. The pain most often occurs between the fifth and seventh months of pregnancy; however, back pain can begin as early as the eighth to twelfth week and continue after delivery.
This is a common problem, often resulting from lumbar (lower back) and posterior pelvic (hip) discomfort. This can be attributed to various pregnancy-related factors, including weight changes, hormonal changes, weakened abdominal muscles, and poor posture. In addition, decreased physical activity during the day can contribute to worsening back pain.
Low back pain during pregnancy typically occurs at the waist and just above, in the middle of the back, or on one or both sides of the spine. This discomfort tends to intensify during activities such as bending, lifting weights, or sitting or standing for prolonged periods.
