Euphony is a term derived from Greek: “eu” (good, well), “phone” (sound, voice), and the suffix “-ia” (quality). An euphonic voice refers to a voice that sounds pleasant. It is a balanced, healthy voice, which requires the proper functioning of the entire phonatory system. This is only possible when all its components act in a coordinated and functional way on every level.
Therefore, a voice considered “normal” is defined as euphonic when all its components are in harmony. However, it is also true that defining the concept of a “normal voice” is very complex, since there is an unlimited variety of voices, and the standards used to define them are quite broad.
During the initial assessment, it is possible to listen to the patient’s voice. Still, complex questions arise: is this a normal voice? Is it appropriate for the person? The voice, by itself, reveals a lot about an individual, and patients often seek help because they feel uncomfortable with their voice—whether because it doesn’t suit their profession, causes social discomfort, or simply because they don’t like the way it sounds.
