Tongue-neck syndrome is a disorder that causes unilateral neck pain, accompanied by simultaneous ipsilateral numbness of the tongue. This can be explained by the compression of the second cervical root in the atlantoaxial space during a abrupt rotation of the neck. It can be secondary, idiopathic, familial, more frequent in women, young people and the pain lasts from a few seconds to a few minutes. The treatment is symptomatic but also prophylactic, the benefit comes from the osteopathic/physiotherapeutic treatment. The International Headache Society (IHS) lists it among “painful injuries of the cranial nerves and other facial pain,” describing it as a sudden onset of pain in the back of the head or upper neck associated with an abnormal sensation on the same side of the tongue.
