Ankle sprains and strains are two injuries that are often confused. These two injuries can cause pain and difficulty walking. Both terms are used to describe a tear or overstretching of the soft tissues surrounding the ankle joints and have similar symptoms, but differ in some characteristics.
Sprains: are the result of overstretching or, in some cases, tearing of the ligaments of the ankle, which are the soft tissues that connect the bones to create a joint. Sprains are quite common at the ankle because ankles are one of the most stressed parts of the body. A hematoma is often present around the sprain site.
Strains: affect muscles and tendons, or a different part of the soft tissues of the ankle, and often cause muscle spasms.
