What is vocal quality and what influences it?

Vocal quality is the quantification of its acoustic characteristics in relation to reference values established in the scientific literature.

But what characteristics define a "good quality" voice?

Alonso identified four key characteristics for evaluating vocal quality:

  • Stability: The ability to produce a constant airflow intensity during the emission of a sustained sound.

  • Spectral richness: The ability to generate periodic movement of the vocal cords and create a vocal tract excitation with a high number of harmonics during sustained phonation.

  • Presence of noise: The presence of glottic noise due to deficits in the vocal cord closure phase during sustained phonation.

  • Non-linearity: The presence of abnormal vocal cord function caused by mass irregularities in the closure phase, movement asymmetries, and mucosal factors.

The biomechanical balance achieved through laryngeal manipulation integrated with osteopathic treatment helps improve cordal coupling, reducing shear stress and peripheral resistance while respecting the patient’s physiological limits.
